Box Score FREDONIA, N.Y. – Sophomore Juliana Kotas scored the eventual game-winning goal with 3.3 seconds left in regulation, to lift the Fredonia State University women's lacrosse team to a narrow, 9-8, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 12-6 overall, while the Engineers conclude their season with a 13-5 mark.
Kotas (Lancaster, NY) put the hosts up 9-8 after a 5:30 offensive possession that included a pair of timeouts. The tally was her second of the game and 10th of the season.
RPI did win the ensuing draw, but senior
Rachel Scofield's (Albany, NY/Colonie) half-field toss fell short of the Fredonia net as the final horn sounded.
The Engineers netted the game's first two goals of the game in the first three minutes. Junior
Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT/Windsor) got the scoring started, before senior
Marissa Page (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) took a feed from junior
Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown) and converted her 23rd of the year.
Fredonia fought back with a pair of free-position tallies by junior Marissa Cussins (Corning, NY) to tie the game at 2-2 with 19:15 left in the first half.
Riley and Scofield came right back to give Rensselaer its two-goal edge back (4-2) with unassisted markers. The goals were their 33rd and 25th of the season, respectively.
Blue Devils senior Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, NY) drew the hosts to within 4-3, before RPI senior
Meg Colitz (Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) netted the final goal of the half with 29 seconds to go, making it 5-3.
Fredonia scored the five of the first six goals to open the second stanza, taking an 8-6 lead with 10:24 remaining in regulation. Junior Katie Glagolev (Webster, NY) picked up two of them, while Cussins had another.
After a four-minute stall by the Blue Devils, RPI was finally able to force a turnover and struck quickly for a pair of goals to tie the game at 8-8. Colitz worked her way from behind the net and scored with 6:03 on the clock to draw within one. Scofield then bagged the equalizer 38 seconds later.
The Blue Devils were able to win the next draw and hold the ball until the waning seconds of the game, before sticking home the winner.
