Championship PageROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team posted two wins in doubles and then won three of the four singles matches that finished to defeat Vassar College, 5-2, in the Liberty League Championship Semifinals at the University of Rochester. The Engineers, the second seed, advance to play top-seeded Skidmore College on Sunday at 10am.
RPI broke out in front with doubles wins at No. 2 and then No. 1. The first doubles team of
Jarrett Regier and
Brandon Mazzara won in a tiebreak, 9-8 (14-12). The Brewers captured No. 3 doubles, also in a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-5).
Rensselaer needed three wins in singles to clinch the match but lost the first one to finish and the match fell even, 2-2. Engineers' freshman
McKinley Grimes then won at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, and classmate - and doubles partner -
Matt LaBarre made it 4-2 for RPI. He won at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3. The match was clinched by senior
Jarrett Regier, who won at No. 2 in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Vassar was also ahead in one of the unfinished matches and the other was tied 3-3 in the first set when Regier closed things out.
RPI, which is ranked 16th in the Northeast Region, improves to 13-4, while Vassar, the 15th-ranked team in the region, falls to 11-9. The win by Rensselaer also avenges a 5-4 regular season loss to the Brewers.
