Erin Riley scored five goals to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 15-8 victory over Union College in the 2014 Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Championship Game Saturday at Renwyck Field. The Engineers won the title for the third straight season and are now 12-4, while the Dutchwomen finish with a 9-7 mark. Riley (West Nyack, NY / Clarkstown South) earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honor for her efforts, finishing with ten points on seven goals and four assists.

Marissa Page (Schenectady, NY / Guilderland) opened the scoring from a Riley pass at 28:13.
Erin Masucci (Windham, NH / Central Catholic) made it 2-0 at 18:44 when she came in through a crowd from the left of the net and went high for her seventh of the year.
Union got on the board at 16:50 when Jessica Farland (Fiskdale, MA / Tanatasqua) scored her 12th of the year. She came from the left through the defense and to the right, in tight, and went high with her shot into the cage. Riley got the two goal lead back at 15:32, coming from behind the net around the left side for her 28th score of the spring, and it was 3-1 RPI. Just 32 seconds later,
Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY / Colonie) gave RPI a 4-1 advantage. With 13:42 left, Riley scored her second of the day, coming out high to the right, 15 yards out, and driving in the Engineers' fifth goal. Riley was behind the net and found
Erin DeLucca (East Lyme, CT / East Lyme) in front, who had a quick release and score at 8:09, giving the hosts a 6-1 lead. Riley came in quickly off a free position save from her netminder, racing down field and notching her third of the game at 7:06. Riley then made it 8-1 with 5:59 left on a pass to the front from Scofield, getting her fourth goal of the day.
Scofield scored on a free position at 4:34, faking a shot before coming in closer and connecting from the right side to push the RPI advantage to 9-1. Ciara Dudeck (Longmeadow, MA / Longmeadow) scored at 1:47 to make it 9-2, breaking through the defense and scoring right outside the crease for Union. Then with 33.7 seconds left, Laura Pacheco (Blue Bell, PA / Mt. St. Joseph Academy) scored on a free position, and the Dutchwomen pulled to within three. Riley got her fifth goal of the half on a free position attempt with just 16 seconds left to play in the half. However, right before the buzzer, Emily McGrail (Westwood, MA / Westwood) acing in close and scoring high, to set the halftime score at 10-4.
The first goal of the second half didn't come until 16:24 left, when
Lydia Wolter (Hampton, NH / St. Thomas Aquinas) scored her third of the season for RPI. She deked her way through the defense and went high and right for an 11-4 Engineers lead.
Jackie Hagopian (Wakefield, RI / The Gunnery) scored at 14:59, pulling Union to within 11-5. Just moments later at 14:30, Hagopian scored again, cutting the Union deficit to five.
Jamie Wakefield (Windsor, CT / Windsor) answered for RPI, and put the Engineers back up by six with 14:13 to go. Hagopian connected on another free position shot at 13:05, and cut the lead to 12-8 at 12:36, as Hagopian's shot went in off a defender for her fourth goal of the day.
Scofield got a pass right in front of the net, and as she was checked, she scored her third of the game with 9:51 to go, before tallying her fourth of the day at 7:56 Wakefield followed with her second of the game, taking a pass in front from
Michelle Denny (Lusby, MD / Patuxent) to set the final score. The Engineers controlled the ball for the remainder of the time, and celebrated their third consecutive championship.
The teams each produced 29 shots, and RPI held an 18-15. The Engineers were 14-for-17 on clears, while Union was 14-for-20.
Erin Amarello (Griswald, CT / St. Bernard School) finished with 12 saves for the Engineesr, while Jen Hughes (Wolfeboro, NH / Brewster Academy) made 10 saves for the Dutchwomen.
Amarello joined Riley on the All-Tournament Team, along with Scofield, Wolter, and
Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI / LaSalle Academy). For Union, Huges, Hagopian, and Comiskey earned All-Tournament Team honors. William Smith's Allie Flaherty and Sarah Honan, along with Vassar's Phoebe Tzannes and Dara Davis rounded out the 12-member team.
The Engineers will await their match up in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Divison III Selection Show will take place on Sunday at 9:30 p.m., and will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
