Season Preview VideoMONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Maura Johnson scored the gamewinner and also recorded an assist to lead Montclair State to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Engineers' first game of the 2014 season.
The teams played to a scoreless first half before Montclair State was able to get on the board in the 54th minute. Johnson's inital shot rebounded in front of the RPI cage and onto the stick of Kaitlyn Struss, who knocked the ball past Engineer goalkeeper
Hilary Fiorentino (West Deptford, NJ / Gloucester County Institute of Technology). Johnson doubled the score for the Red Hawks just under four minutes later, taking an unassisted shot on the right doorstep to give Montclair State a 2-0 advantage.
RPI attempted to make a late run, as junior transfer
Celia D'Agostino (Saratoga Springs, NY / Saratoga Springs) collected a rebound off an intial scoring attempt by
Megan Jones (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island), and passed off to senior captain
Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford), who found the back of the cage.
Montclair State outshot Rensselaer, 19-6, and held a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Fiorentino recorded eight saves between the pipes for the Engineers in her first collegiate appearance, while Montclair State's Rebbeca Brattole finished with five stops for the Red Hawks (2-0).
RPI (0-1) will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Hartwick for a non-conference contest at 4 p.m.
