Day 1 ResultsMIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Day one of competition is complete at the Middlebury Invitational Men's Tennis Tournament. Action began Saturday morning on Proctor Courts before rain forced the matches inside the Nelson Recreational Center and the Middlebury Indoor Tennis facility. Matches concluded just before 9:00 p.m. Saturday night.
The Engineers saw two singles players and two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals before bowing out.
McKinley Grimes won his first round match in A Flight Singles, defeating his opponent from Middlebury, 6-2, 6-2. He then lost 7-5, 6-4 to Dan Carpenter of Trinity. In D Flight Singles,
Sherman Uyeno defeated his first round opponent, a student-athlete from Brandeis, 6-3, 6-4, before being beaten by Skidmore's Ted Berkowitz, 6-4, 6-3.
The doubles team of Grimes and
Brandon Mazzara won its first round match in the A Flight, 8-2 over a team from Tufts, before being defeated, 8-5, from a tandem from the host Panthers.

Sundar Devakottai were also winners in the first round, 8-6 in the B Flight, before losing in the quarterfinals, 8-0, to foes from Tufts.
Action concludes on Sunday with singles and double semifinal and final rounds.Â
