POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Two first half goals led Vassar to a 2-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League field hockey action on Wednesday evening at Weinberg Field. With the loss, RPI drops to 1-5 overall with an 0-2 mark in conference play, while Vassar improves to 8-1 overall, with a 1-0 league slate.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead into halftime behind goals from Haley Merritt and Hayley Beach. Merritt scored the first goal of the game, as she tipped in a drive by Emma Bracken on a penalty corner at 19:40. Beach gave Vassar the two-goal advantage just three minutes before the half, as Storm Sideleau sent a crossing pass through the circle where Beach tipped the ball in past Rensselaer goalkeeper Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional).

The Engineers got on the board in the 38th minute, as junior Celia D'Agostino (Saratoga Springs, NY / Saratoga Springs) converted a penalty stroke opportunity, shooting the ball into the top left of the cage past Vassar goaltender Amreen Bhasin to pull within 2-1. RPI got several more shots on goal throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize.

Vassar outshot the Engineers, 15-13, and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. Clough and Bhasin both recorded six saves in their respective cages.

Rensselaer will return to action on Sunday, visiting Union in continued Liberty League play at 2 p.m.
