TROY, N.Y. -- Senior forward Molly Zuk scored the gamewinner just 2:15 into the second half to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 2-0 win over SUNY Geneseo in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Harkness Field. The Engineers, who have now won two straight games, improve to 3-5, while Geneseo drops to 3-6 overall.

After a scoreless first half, Rensselaer finally broke the 0-0 tie at 37:15, as Knights goalkeeper Dayna Mercer (Katonah, NY / John Jay) came out of the cage. The Engineers capitalized, and Hana Murphy (Westport, MA / Tilton School) passed the ball to Zuk (Stoughton, MA / Stoughton), who tipped it into the net. RPI doubled its score in the 43rd minute, when freshman Jena Nawfel (Waterville, ME / Waterville) drove an unassisted shot from just inside the far circle straight into the back of the cage.

Geneseo attempted to come back late in the game, letting loose a flurry of shots against RPI's Hannah Clough (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional), but the senior goalkeeper stopped each one to preserve the win for the Engineers.

Both teams took 17 shots in the game, with RPI holding a 12-5 lead in the first half and Geneseo posting a 12-5 advantage in the second. The Knights also came away with a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. Clough recorded 10 saves between the pipes for the Engineers, while senior Chloe Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford) made a defensive save for Rensselaer. Mercer stopped 11 opposing shots for Geneseo.

RPI will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4, visiting St. Lawrence in Liberty Leauge action.
