Tristan Wise advanced to the semifinals of the A Flight singles and four of his Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) teammates qualified for the B Flight semifinals on the first day of the three-team University of Rochester Fall Invitational. Hobart College is the third school participating.
Wise was one of four Engineers in the A Flight and he was the only one to win his first two matches to qualify for Sunday's semifinals. He defeated Matt DePrima of Hobart, 8-2, in the first round and then downed Ben Shapiro of Rochester, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. He will face Julian Danko of Rochester in the semifinals.
The B Flight singles semifinals features only Engineers with
Sherman Uyeno,
Anthony Kim,
Will Dickie and
Stephen Baxter all winning twice on Saturday. Kim's quarterfinal victory was over another teammate,
Graham Harris, 8-4.
Rensselaer also enjoyed success in doubles as the team of McKinley Grimes and Brandon Mazzara advanced to the semifinals. They will face Danko and Shapiro of Rochester. The team of Uyeno and Harris also advanced to the quarterfinals but they were defeated in a tiebreak, 9-8 (8-6).
