SMS Text AlertsBRUNSWICK, Maine - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) indoor track & field teams opened the 2015 at the Bowdoin Invitational I and the Engineers men finished fourth, while the women were fifth. MIT won both meets, followed by WPI and Bowdoin. RPI was followed by the Springfield men and Colby Sawyer. The Springfield women were fourth, followed by Rensselaer and Colby Sawyer.
The Engineers saw two student-athletes earn victory on the track. Dylan Landry won the 600 meters in a time of 1:21.75 and Benjamin Fazio was victorious in the 3000 meters (8:40.69). Landry also helped the 4x400 relay team to a second place finish (3:29.27). The 4x800 relay team was third, finishing in a time of 8:26.49, as was Gumina - who ran the second leg of the 4x8 - in the 800 meters (1:59.71).
RPI's women had two third place finishes and three fourths on the oval.
Christine Artim was third in the 3000 meters (11:17.41) and
Allison Thayer was third in the 5000 (19:44.20).
Sabrina Ahamparam and
Alexa Sakorafos were both fourth in their events, the 400 (1:04.06) and the 1000 (3:08.86), as was the 4x800 relay team (10:39.77).
In the field events, the standout for Rensselaer was Tyler Yeastedt, who was second in both the shot put and the weight throw. He had a distance of 14.31 meters in the former and 17.51 in the latter.
The Engineers are back in action next Saturday at Springfield College.
