RPI Athletics on TwitterEDGEWATER, N.J. – The No. 38 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team opened an early lead in doubles, but No. 40 Stevens Institute of Technology came back to defeat the Engineers, 7-2.
The win evens Stevens' record at 2-2 in a schedule that's featured three nationally ranked opponents. The loss dropped RPI to 2-1.
RPI grabbed the early lead with an 8-4 lead at second doubles by
Tristan Wise and
Al Grullon Gonzalez, but the Ducks answered with juniors Matthew Heinrich and Ben Foran's 8-3 win at No. 1. RPI came back with an 8-4 win at No. 3 by
Stephen Baxter and
Sherman Uyeno to take the 2-1 edge heading into singles.
Stevens evened the match with freshmen Danny Polk's 6-2, 6-1 win at fifth singles before Matthew Heinrich grabbed the lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1. Ben Foran continued the streak with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 followed by a match clinching win at No. 6 for Henry, 6-3, 6-3.
