Fan ShopANAHEIM, Calif. - Sophomore
McKinley Grimes came-from-behind to win his No. 1 singles match in dramatic fashion and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team defeated George Fox University, 5-4, at Anaheim Country Club. RPI improves to 7-3 on the season, while the Bruins fall to 10-5.
Grimes (Bedford, NH / Bedford) needed three sets and a comeback to defeat Spencer Watanabe, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 and clinch the match for the Engineers.
"It was an epic match from McKinley," said head coach
Jon Satkowski. "Coming back from down 5-2 in the second set and fighting off four match points to win the deciding match in a very dramatic fashion made it a huge win for the team, especially rolling in to our off day."Â
Grimes was one of three RPI singles players to earn victory, along with junior
Alain Grullon Gonzalez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic / St. Michael's School)Â at No. 4 and junior
Sherman Uyeno (Brea, CA / Brea Olinda)Â at No. 5 - both in straight sets. Gonzalez and Uyeno also won their respective doubles matches, 8-5 and 8-3.
Rensselaer returns to the courts on March 27 against Glendale Community College (1pm).
