RPI Athletics on YouTubeTROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches by defeating Hamilton College, 7-2, in a non-league contest at Sharp Courts. The Engineers, who have not lost since March 23, are now 12-3 on the season. The Continentals fall to 8-10.
Rensselaer jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles, beginning with an 8-2 win at No. 3 by
Sherman Uyeno (Brea, CA / Brea Olinda) and
Graham Harris (Reno, NV / Galena). RPI's top team of
McKinley Grimes (Bedford, NH / Bedford) and
Brandon Mazzara (Orange, CA / Villa Park) won by the same score to put the Engineers ahead, 2-0.
Grimes, playing No. 1, gave the home team a 4-0 win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Max McKee-Proctor (Newton, MA / Newton North High School), but the Continentals cut their deficit to 4-2 by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Uyeno clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 before
Stephen Baxter (Carmel, IN / Carmel) and
Alain Grullon Gonzalez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic / St. Michael's School) won at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively.
The Engineers, who are ranked 14th in the Northeast Region, host Union College in their regular season finale on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. Hamilton is also back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Hobart College, also at 4pm.
