Football Heads to Alfred

THE KICKOFF
A pair of 1-0 teams take the field on Saturday when the Engineers travel west to play Alfred. The Engineers defeated Norwich 37-0 at home last week, while the Saxons traveled 660 miles to Maine, where they defeated Husson, 39-25. 

THE SERIES
This is the 20th all-time meeting between RPI and Alfred, with the Saxons holding a 13-6-0 advantage in the series. The programs met in 2013 for the fourth straight year, with the Engineers coming away with a 24-21 win. Alfred came back to win last year's meeting 34-31 in Troy.

ENGINEERS LAST WEEK
Rensselaer's offense scored 35 first half points, while the defense held Norwich to just 14 yards and one first down in the opening two quarters, in a 37-0 win. The Engineers scored three touchdowns on the ground and two through the air as five different student-athletes found paydirt. RPI's attack featured 120 rushing yards on seven carries for sophomore Mike Tivinis  and 80 yards on the ground from Nick Schlatz. Ten others also carried the ball out of the backfield. Jeff Avery completed 14 of 19 passes for 208 yards and two scores. The defense held the Cadets to under 100 yards in both rushing (62) and receiving (92). They had three sacks (21 yards lost), seven tackles for lost yards (31) and six PBUs.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
RPI seniors Jeff Avery and Mark Grimes were named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll for their efforts last week. Avery completed 14 of 19 passes for 208 yards and two scores, while Grimes had five tackles including three unassisted and a six yard sack. He also forced a fumble that led to a touchdown.

SAXONS LAST WEEK
Alfred rallied for a 39-25 victory at Husson. After spotting the host Eagles a 12-0 lead after one quarter, AU responded with three touchdowns to take the lead. Junior wide receiver Maleke Fuentes scored three touchdowns and junior defensive tackle Andy Miller forced a pair of fumbles as the Saxons overcame first- and third-quarter deficits.

FRANKS '15 MAKES MIAMI DOLPHINS
Former Rensselaer standout Andrew Franks '15, a consensus All-America last sesason, has been named the starting kicker for the Miami Dolphins. An undrafted free agent, he will become the first student-athlete from RPI to play in an NFL regular season game when the Dolphins play the Washington Redskins on Sunday (1pm).
