Football Looks To Retain Transit

THE KICKOFF: For the second straight week, the Engineers take on the Engineers ... Last week RPI defeated MIT 42-7 ... This week the Engineers from Troy travel to Worcester to battle WPI in the Engineers' Homecoming Game (1pm).

TRANSIT TROPHY: After the 1979 contest it was decided by the athletic directors of both schools to create a trophy for this long-standing rivalry ... A transit was chosen because both schools have engineering curriculums ... The Engineers from Troy lead the Transit Trophy series, 23-11-1, including a 27-6 victory in a night game at ECAV last season.

LIBERTY LEAGUE OPENER: The game is the first of the Liberty League season for RPI and WPI ... Last season RPI was 4-3 in the conference, finishing third, while WPI was 3-4 and finished in a three-way tie for fourth.

ENGINEERS CUP: The winner of the game between RPI and WPI will be 2-0 against the Engineers this season ... RPI defeated MIT 42-7 last Saturday, while WPI beat MIT 31-28 on September 4.

THE SERIES: Saturday's game against the Engineers is the 109th meeting between the two schools, dating back to November 3, 1894 ... Rensselaer fell to WPI 4-0 in that first game ... The all-time series is led by RPI, which owns a 57-46-5 advantage ... RPI is 33-18-3 (.639) all-time against the Engineers in Troy ... This year is the 12th that RPI and WPI have been league competitors ... Rensselaer is 8-3 in conference games.

IN THE RECORD BOOK: Rensselaer's 108 all-time meetings with WPI are the second most against any one opponent, trailing only Union (112) ... RPI's 57 wins over the Engineers rank first against a single foe ... Rensselaer's 46 losses is second (79 to Union).

TRENDING: RPI had won 13 straight games against WPI, including the previous six in Troy, going into the 2010 meeting … WPI snapped that streak with a 24-10 win at Rensselaer's East Campus Stadium ... WPI won back-to-back games against RPI in 2010 and 2011 – the first time that happened since 1995 and 1996 ... The Engineers from Massachusetts have now won three of the last five meetings.

RPI TO DATE: RPI is off to a 2-1 start after opening with a 37-0 over Norwich and losing at Alfred 32-20 in its first road game ... The Engineers bounced back to defeat MIT 42-7 last week ... WPI is 3-0 with wins over MIT (31-28), at Worcester State (27-13) and Norwich (27-10).

RECENT LEAGUE OPENERS: RPI is 5-5 in its last 10 league openers, including 4-3 against WPI over the past seven years ... RPI is 2-3 on the road in that span.

RPI LAST WEEK: Jeff Avery threw for three touchdowns, Mike Tivinis ran for a pair of scores and the RPI defense held MIT to just 37 yards rushing as the Engineers defeated the Engineers 42-7 ... Avery, a senior, connected on scores of 14 yards, five yards and 23 yards - to three different receivers - and Tivinis, a sophomore, scored both of his touchdowns from a yard out ... Two of Avery's touchdowns and both runs by Tivinis came in the first half as Rensselaer built a 21-7 lead after the first quarter and 28-7 bulge at halftime ... MIT was held to a total of 210 yards ... RPI's defense was balanced as 13 different players had at least three tackles, led by senior linebacker Mark Grimes, who had seven stops, including four unassisted ... Classmate Teague Florio, a cornerback, had five unassisted tackles and two pass breakups ... As a team the Engineers made six tackles for lost yards (23) and intercepted two passes.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: RPI senior quarterback Jeff Avery was named to the Liberty League's Weekly Honor Roll after he compiled 252 yards on 19 of 30 passing ... He was not sacked, nor was he intercepted ... He also rushed seven times for 24 yards.
