GENEVA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team went 9-0 in the first round and still have two individuals and a doubles team alive in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament being held at Hobart College. Junior
Tristan Wise and freshman
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez have moved into the quarterfinals in singles, while Castillo-Sanchez and
Zack Ebenfeld have done the same in doubles.
The Engineers had 8-0 wins by
Stephen Baxter and Castillo-Sanchez in the first round of singles with Wise posting an 8-2 win and
Xavier Oshinowo winning 8-3. Oshinowo and Sundar Devakottai won their first round doubles match 8-1 and Castillo-Sanchez and Ebenfeld had an 8-2 victory.
The second round of singles saw Castillo-Sanchez with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Thomas Wright of The College of New Jersey and Wise triumph over James Hicks of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 6-1, 7-5. Oshinowo lost in a dramatic three-set contest, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
Ebenfeld and Castillo-Sanchez defeated Masaru Fujimaki and Sahaj Somani of the University of Rochester 8-4 to advance to Sunday's competition.
