LATHAM, N.Y. - Needing a victory to earn the third seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team did just that, defeating Hobart College, 6-3, at Tri-City Fitness. The Engineers conclude the regular season with an 8-7 dual meet record and a 5-2 conference mark. RPI plays St. Lawrence University, the second seed, in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament on Saturday. The Statesmen fall to 9-8 and 4-3 and face top-seeded Skidmore College in the conference semis.
The Engineers enjoyed a 2-1 lead after doubles and then built on it by winning the first three singles, along with No. 6 singles. Among the Engineers with multiple victories was sophomore
Tristan Wise at No. 1 singles (6-4, 7-6 (4) and No. 1 doubles with playing partner
Sherman Uyeno (8-4). Uyeno won at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3) and senior classmate
Alain Grullon Gonzalez came from behind and captured No. 3 singles (3-6, 6-3, 7-5). Grullon Gonzalez also won in doubles, winning at No. 2 with
Graham Harris, 8-3.
Hobart's Harry Nichols and Patrick Gray both had two victories. They teamed up to win No. 3 doubles, 9-7, before winning at No. 4 (6-3, 6-2) and No. 5 (6-3, 6-2), respectively.
