SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The doubles team of
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and
Andrew Imrie came back from two breaks down to win its semifinal match and advance to the finals of the ITA Regional Tournament hosted by Skidmore College. The duo faces Skidmore's Steven Koulouris and JT Wynne for the championship on Monday. The winning team becomes National All-America and advances to the ITA National Championship Tournament later in the month.
Castillo-Sanchez, a sophomore who won the tournament last season with
Zack Ebenfeld, and Imrie, a freshman, beat Danny Polk and William Persson of Stevens Institute of Technoloy, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. They then played Alan Dubrovsky and Jonah Salita of Hobart College in the semis, coming back to win, 8-6. RPI's twosome were behind 6-3 before winning five straight games, including 12 consecutive points, to win.
In singles action, Rensselaer had three student-athletes in the quarterfinals, but each were beaten in that frame. Castillo-Sanchez defeated Minos Stavrakas of Ithaca College in the third round, 6-2, 6-1, but lost to Dubrovsky, 6-4, 6-3. Imrie lost to Dubrovsky in the third round, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Freshman
Brian Niguidula beat David Gandham of Vassar College, 6-3, 6-0, in round three, but lost a close match to Danny Polk of Stevens Institute of Technology, 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, in the quarters.
Clay Thompson, another freshman, defeated Lucas Pickering of Skidmore, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Koulouris, 6-4, 6-3.
Action concludes on Monday on the campus of Skidmore. Singles action begins at 9am with doubles play to follow.
