Box Score STORRS, Conn. – Senior captain Justine Fredette accounted for a goal and an assist on Friday night, as the University of Connecticut women's hockey team rushed past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-1 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
Four different Huskies (4-3-1, 0-2-1 WHEA) scored against the Engineers (3-5-1, 1-0-1 ECAC), including freshman Natalie Snodgrass, who is now tied with teammate Briana Colangelo for the team lead. Senior Theresa Knutson and junior Rebecca Lindblad added tallies of their own on.
It took the Huskies nearly 25 minutes to get adjusted against RPI. In the second period, Lindblad and Snodgrass scored just 32 seconds apart – followed by Fredette's goal five minutes later. Senior Annie Belanger was tough between the pipes, making 19 saves on the night.
Lindblad broke the scoreless tie with her tally just 4:14 into the second period, burying a shot off a pass from sophomore Catherine Crawley on a breakaway. Less than a minute later, Snodgrass benefited off a dish from senior Leah Lum to make it 2-0.
Fredette provided a goal at the 9:51 mark, stealing the puck away from an RPI attacker in the UConn zone and taking it down the ice – finishing from the left side of the net for an unassisted goal.
At 5:16 in the third, Knutson sealed the game with a rip from the left side – beating RPI goalie Lovisa Selander to make it 4-0. Mee and Fredette received assists on the tally.
Each team had three penalties in the game, with RPI scoring a power play goal late in the third period after Crawley went to the box for checking. Senior Whitney Renn netted her second goal of the season with the lone assist going to junior Jaimie Grigsby.
The Huskies get a rematch with RPI on Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum, with puck drop scheduled for 3pm.
