LATHAM, N.Y. -
Suryansh Patel pulled out a three-set victory at No. 5 singles to break a 4-4 tie and give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) a 5-4 victory over the University of Rochester in a non-league men's tennis match at Tri-City Fitness.
The Engineers, who held a 2-1 lead after doubles, dropped three of the first five singles matches and needed Patel to win to salvage the victory. The sophomore came through, posting a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Also victorious in singles for RPI (2-0) were the No. 1 and No. 2 players,
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and
Xavier Oshinowo. Castillo-Sanchez won 6-4, 6-2, while Oshinowo posted a 6-3, 6-3 win. The win was the second of the day for both as they also won their respective doubles matches.
RPI is idle until March 12 when it plays Colby-Sawyer College in Florida. Rochester, which is now 3-4, hosts Union College on Saturday.
