CANTON, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team enjoyed a group effort in sweeping St. Lawrence University, 9-0, and snapping a five-match losing streak in a Liberty League contest. The Engineers improve to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Saints fall to 3-6 and 1-1.
Rensselaer, which faced three nationally-ranked programs in each of its previous three matches, got off to a strong start in doubles, paced by the No. 1 team of
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Zach Ebenfeld. The pair put the visitors in front with an 8-2 win. A win by
Winston Yu and Sundar Devakottai at No. 3 made it 2-0 and
Tristan Wise and
Xavier Oshinowo boosted the margin to 3-0.
Oshinowo completed the first singles match, capturing No. 2, 6-0, 6-2, and Castillo-Sanchez clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 1.
Suryansh Patel gave the Engineers the sweep with a come-from-behind win at No. 6, 2-6, 7-5, 10-4.
The Engineers are back in action on Sunday when they host Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Bard College in a pair of Liberty League contests. The matches are scheduled for 9am and 1pm, respectively.
