#RPIFH To Start Season on Friday

GAME-DAY: Rensselaer field hockey makes its 2017 debut with a non-league contest against Hartwick College.

SEASON OPENERS: Over the last decade, RPI is 3-7 in its season openers ... Two of those games have been against Hartwick, three were against Montclair State and two versus Keene State.

HOME GAMES: The Engineers have 17 regular season games this season with seven at Harkness Field ... RPI was 6-3 in home games a season ago.

IN 2016: Rensselaer won four of its final five games, including each of its last three, to finished with a 10-7 overall record ... The late season wins came against Union (2-1 OT), Vassar (1-0), New Paltz (4-2) and Oneonta (2-1) ... The lone loss was to nationally-ranked Middlebury (2-0).

AGAINST HARTWICK IN 2016: Rensselaer amassed 25 shots with 18 on goal, but the Engineers fell at Hartwick, 2-1 ... The Hawks got 16 saves from Shannon Carter and a defensive save from Maggie Stauble to thwart RPI's attack ... Taylor Clink scored RPI's lone goal, tying the game at 1-1 in the first half ... Mikaela DiBello had seven shots, four of which were on goal ... Hartwick took the lead with 14:10 to go in the first stanza when Maxine Dunn rattled off a shot that found its way across the goal line ... Clink tied the game at 22:39 off of a Megan Jones' penalty corner ...  Clink sailed a shot in from the top of the circle into the cage ... Following a defensive save, Allyson Quirk collected a pass from Sarah Ryan and scored while cutting  down the middle ... Kayla Bell made three first half stops with none in the second in the loss.

ALL-TIME VS. HARTWICK: The Engineers and Hawks have played 39 games all-time and the series is dead-even at 19-19-1 ... RPI is 9-7-1 at home against Hartwick.

RECENTLY: Last season's loss to the Hawks snapped a six-game winning streak for Rensselaer against Hartwick ... Among those games were three wins at Harkness Field.

FIRST TIME: The first meeting between RPI and Hartwick came on October 22, 1977, a 6-0 win by the Hawks ... Hartwick won the next year (3-0) before the Engineers went on a six-game winning streak from 1979 to 1985).

LEADING THE WAY: Rensselaer is coached by Bridget LaNoir '99, now in her 17th season ... A member of the RPI Athletics Hall of Fame for field hockey and ice hockey, she became the program's all-time winningest coach in 2009, passing her former coach Beth Hallenbeck on October 20, 2009, when the Engineers defeated Utica, 2-0.

TEAM LEADERS: Serving as RPI's captains this season are Kate Batzinger, Taylor Clink and Jane Edgington ... Batzinger and Edgington are seniors, while Clink is a junior ... A midfielder, Batzinger has played 49 games in her first three seasons, scoring four goals with an assist for nine points, along with 15 shots (7 on goal) and a defensive save ... Clink, a back, has started each of the first 31 games she has played in her first two seasons ... As a sophomore, she had five goals and three assists for 13 points with 28 shots - third on the team in each category - on her way to earning All-Liberty League Second Team and NFHCA All-North Atlantic Region Second Team ... An attack, Edgington had three goals and two assists with 19 shots (14 on goal) in 17 games last year ... She has four goals and four assists with 31 shots (23 on goal) in 37 career contests.

ROSTER MAKE UP: RPI returns 19 student-athletes from last season including seven seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen.

RETURNING FIREPOWER: Rensselaer has each of its top five scorers back, along with both goalies.
