MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Freshmen
Andrew Imrie and
Brian Niguidula both won their first two matches to advance to the semifinals for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team, which is making its season debut at the Middlebury Invitational. Imrie is playing in the C Flight, while Niguidula is the top seed in the D Flight.
Following a 6-3, 6-2 win over Zach Cihlar of Brandeis in the opening round, Imrie defeated Weston Brach of the host Panthers, 6-0, 6-3, to reach Sunday's semifinals. He faces the top seed, Ben Biswas of Tufts University in action that begins at 1pm.
Niguidula takes on Armaan Kalra of Tufts in his semifinal match after beating Owen Greenwood of Bates College, 6-1, 6-4, in his first collegiate match and Harshil Dwivedi of Brandeis, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Advancing past the first round for RPI was sophomore
Zack Ebenfeld, who defeated Jafar Sharipov of Hamilton College, 6-0, 6-0, in a C Flight match. Ebenfeld then lost in a three-set contest with Nicholas Glover of Bates, the third seed, 1-6, 6-1, 10-8.
Suryansh Patel also won his first round match, 6-4, 7-6 (5), over third-seeded Thorne Gregory of Middlebury, but Patel suffered an injury in the quarterfinals and was forced to withdraw from the D Flight.
Three other Engineers played singles but they each lost in the first round.
In doubles, three teams advanced into the quarterfinals, but could not go farther.
McKinley Grimes and
Tristan Wise were victorious, 9-8 (4), before losing to the top seed in the A Flight, 8-3.
Sundar Devakottai and
Winston Yu won in the B Flight, 8-5, before being eliminated, 8-4. And Niguidula and Ebenfeld posted an 8-3 win before bowing out, 8-3.
Doubles action begins on Sunday at 9am and singles is scheduled for 1pm on Proctor Courts.
