TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's track & field programs began their seasons on Saturday with meets at the Reggie Lewis Center, the home of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championship. The Engineers, who are led by head coach
Colin Tory, performed well in the multi-divisional, non team scoring competitions and continue their seasons this weekend at Utica College.
Including Saturday, RPI has nine meets before its qualifiers return to Boston for the national championship. The teams then transition to the outdoor season and compete in 11 meets.
Both the men and women had outstanding 2017-18 campaigns with the women boasting five top 3 finishes, while the men earned seven. Among Rensselaer's men's three victories was its 10th straight Liberty League Outdoor Championship. The Engineers then went on to finish a school record fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, highlighted by a national championship performance in the 5000 meters by
Grant O'Connor. Also the Division III runner-up in the 10000 meters, O'Connor was named the USTFCCCA National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year - the first in school history.
