UTICA, N.Y. -
Dale Kelly won two events and four others were also victorious as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team won the Utica College Pioneer Winter Classic, defeating seven other schools. The Engineers compiled 171 points to outdistance the host Pioneers, who had 158. St. John Fisher College was third with 85 points.
Kelly, a junior, won the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.05 with teammate
Zaire Wilson finishing second in 7.14. Kelly also finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.31. The runner-up crossed in 23.64.
Also on the track, sophomore
Evan Atherton won the 5000-meters with a time of 15:56.70, while teammates
Frank Triolo,
Roman Silen and
Owen Szabo were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Rensselaer had two of the top three finishers in both the mile and the 3000-meters. Daniel Scherb won the mile in 4:32.11 with
Dom Favata coming in third place and
Ryan Berlin captured the 3000-meters in 8:55.41 with
John Reed placing third.
RPI's fifth winner was junior
Mark Shapiro, who won the weight throw with an effort of 17.42. The junior also finished third in the shot put with a throw of 13.60.
Other notable performances for the Engineers was
Alex Jonson's second place finish in the 60 Hurdles,
Neil Casimir's third place finish in the 400-meters and Joseph Osaheni's third place finish in the triple jump.
