ORLANDO, Fla. - With the match tied at 4-4, freshman
Brian Niguidula won a tiebreak at No. 4 singles to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team a 5-4 victory over The University of Texas at Tyler, the 26th-ranked team in the nation, on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus. Rensselaer improves to 6-1, while the Patriots drop to 5-2.
Niguidula, who had partnered with
Tristan Wise to capture No. 3 doubles (8-5), posted a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over junior Pablo Gomez for the team victory. He followed up singles victories by sophomore
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez at No. 1 (6-2, 6-7 (4), (10-8), freshman
Clay Thompson at No. 3 (6-4, 6-2) and sophomore
Zack Ebenfeld at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2).
The win was the third straight for the Engineers in Florida, where they play one more match before returning from Spring Break.
