WALTHAM, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team went toe-to-toe with No. 20 Brandeis University, but the Engineers came out on the wrong end of an extremely close match, 5-3. Two of the doubles matches went to tiebreaks and three of the singles matches needed third sets. The sixth singles was not completed because the match was played to decision.
In doubles, Rensselaer's No. 3 team of
Tristan Wise and
Brian Niguidula tied the match at 1-1 with a dramatic 9-8 (3) victory. Brandeis won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for a 2-1 lead going into singles.
The Judges made it a 3-1 edge with a win at No. 3, but RPI's
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez followed with a win at No. 1, 7-5, 6-4, before Brandeis won at No. 2 singles in three sets. A victory at No. 5 singles, also in three sets, sealed the win for the home team.
