TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team posted seven individual victories and the Engineers won the 12-school Capital District Classic at the Ned Harkness Track & Field. RPI earned 190.50 points to outdistance SUNY Oneonta (138) and the University of Albany (94), which finished in second and third place, respectively.
Three victories came in field events, including a pair of first and second place finishes. Senior
Matt Vitagliano won the triple jump with a distance of 14.20 meters, while teammate
Luca Scheuer was second at 13.37 meters.Â
Graduate student
Malcolm Porterfield collected 10 points in the hammer throw with a 47.80 meter effort with sophomore teammate
Mark Shapiro less than a meter behind (47.44) for runner-up. There were 22 competitors in the field.
In the javelin,
Joe Grella bested 17 others with a throw of 51.30 meters, which occurred on his second attempt.
On the track,
Ryan Morrison earned 10 points in the 20-person 5000 meter run as he crossed the finish line in 15:23.77. Sophomore
Alex Jonson won the 110 hurdles (15.24) and
Leighton James captured the 400 hurdles (57.24).Â
Max Maritato had the top finish among those attached in the high jump with an effort of 1.78.
In addition to Scheuer coming in second in the triple jump, Rensselaer's
Joseph Vetere was runner-up in the pole vault. He was directly followed by teammates Connor Madry (3.95) and
Pavel Lopez Haas (3.80).
Rensselaer returns to competition this weekend when it will attempt to defend its Liberty League Championship.
