ITHACA, N.Y. – In a new expanded championship format, six men's teams and six women's teams will compete for the Liberty League tennis championships this Friday-Sunday, May 4-6. Matches will take place at both the Wheeler Tennis Courts at Ithaca College and the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University. The top two teams for both men and women earn first-round byes. Two quarterfinal matches will be held on Friday, May 4, two semifinals on May 5 and the championship match on May 6 for each gender. The championship teams receive the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.

WEATHER UPDATE: Due to the forecast of rain on Friday, all matches will be held indoors at the Reis Tennis Center.

6 p.m. (WOMEN): #3 St. Lawrence vs. #6 RPI

2 p.m. (WOMEN): #3/#6 winner vs. #2 Vassar

ABOUT THE TEAMS:

#1 SKIDMORE (11-5 overall, 8-0 Liberty League)
  • The Thoroughbreds have won four straight Liberty League titles, eight of the last 10 and 13 in the 22-year history of the league.
  • Skidmore is ranked 25th nationally and ninth in the Northeast region in the latest ITA Division III poll.
  • The top doubles team of senior Steven Koulouris and sophomore JT Wynne are 16-8 overall and 8-5 in dual matches. Koulouris and Wynne are the fifth-ranked doubles team in the region.
  • Wynne, 18-6 in singles play in 2017-18, won the ITA Northeast singles title in the fall.
#2 RPI (13-3 overall, 7-1 Liberty League)
  • The Engineers are seeking their first Liberty League title.
  • RPI currently ranks 27th nationally and 10th in the Northeast region in the ITA Division III poll.
  • The Engineers have two sophomores and three freshmen among their top six singles players.
  • Sophomore Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez is currently 18-5 overall, including 13-3 at first singles.
#3 HOBART (12-6, 6-2 Liberty League)
  • The Statesmen currently rank 36 nationally and 11th in the Northeast region latest ITA Division III poll.
  • Hobart, which lost to Skidmore in last year's Liberty League championship match, is seeking its first league title since the 2003-04 season.
  • Sophomore Alan Dubrovsky is currently 20-7 overall and 7-1 in Liberty League dual match singles play.
#4 ITHACA (5-9, 5-3 Liberty League)
  • The Bombers are in their first year as Liberty League members after previously competing in the Empire 8. Ithaca won five Empire 8 titles since 1999.
  • Sophomore Minos Stavrakas is 12-7 in singles play, 10-4 at first singles and 7-1 in Liberty League play. His only Liberty League loss was to Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez of RPI.
  • Stavrakas and junior Sam McGrath (11-3 at second singles) are a combined 13-3 in Liberty League singles play.
#5 VASSAR (6-12, 4-4 Liberty League)
  • Vassar has won three Liberty League titles (2007, 2010, 2013), second-most in league history.
  • Freshman David Gandham leads the Brewers with 11 victories in singles play (11-10) and is 5-3 in Liberty League play.
  • The doubles team of Jeremy Auh and Adam Krueger currently ranks 11th in the ITA Northeast region and has a 10-6 dual match record at first doubles.
#6 ST. LAWRENCE (7-10, 3-5 Liberty League)
  • St. Lawrence won its only Liberty League men's tennis title in 1997-98.
  • The Saints won three of their final four matches, all Liberty League matches, to clinch a bid to return to the tournament after missing out on a bid last season.
  • Freshman Leo Romanetz leads the Saints with 13 singles wins, including an 11-6 record at second singles.
