Reunion & Homecoming Weekend
GENEVA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team saw five individuals win their first round matches and three of those student-athletes have advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles portion of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional hosted by Hobart College. The first day of doubles could not be completed and will continue into Saturday.
In singles, freshman
Dylan Payne, sophomore
Clay Thompson and junior
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez both went 2-0 on Friday to stay alive in the main draw. Payne won his first round match, 7-5, 6-1, before a 6-4. 6-3 win in the second round. He faces the top seed, JT Wynne of Skidmore on Saturday.
Thompson needed three sets to win his first match, which went into a third set tiebreak. He prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 and then won his second round match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. He faces Keegen Morris of Stevens on Saturday.
Castillo-Sanchez, the second seed, played only three games in his first match before his opponent was forced to retire. He then won his second round match, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to play Travis Leaf of Skidmore.
Rensselaer nearly had all six of its players move into the second round, but freshman
Victor Stoyanov lost in a third set tiebreak, 1-6, 6-3, 12-10. And in the second round,
Brian Niguidula also fell in a long, three set match, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
