GENEVA, N.Y. - Junior
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez has advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Northeast Regional in both singles and doubles, joined by playing partner
Andrew Imrie in the latter. The singles and doubles champions in each of the ITA's nine regions advance to the 2018 ITA Cup. The National Small College Championships will be held October 11-14 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. Action concludes on Sunday.Â
Castillo-Sanchez, Rensselaer's No. 1 singles and doubles player, defeated Travis Leaf of Skidmore in the Round of 16, 6-4, 6-1, before a straight set, 6-4, 7-5, win over Justin Wain of TCNJ. The second-seed, Castillo-Sanchez takes on Vishal Walia of NYU in the semifinals.
In doubles, he and Imrie earned victories of 8-5 in the first round, 8-3 in the Round of 16 and 8-3 in the quarterfinals. Their semifinals matchup is against Alan Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson of Hobart. Castillo-Sanchez and Imrie are attempting to advance to the final for the second straight year.
The Engineers nearly had two teams in the semi, but Dubrovsky and Anderson knocked out the tandem of
Dylan Payne and
Zack Ebenfeld in the quarters, 8-5. That followed a Round of 16 defeat by
Brian Niguidula and
Eddie Wu after Rensselaer had gone 5-0 in its first five doubles matches.
In singles, sophomore
Clay Thompson advanced to the quarterfinals but lost a three-set match to Dubrovsky, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3. Thompson had moved into the Round of 16 with a come-from-behind, three-set victory, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Payne also played in that round, but was upended, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, by top-seeded JT Wynne of Skidmore.
