TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes Jessica Kugelman and
Alex Aung are among those recognized by the Liberty League with weekly awards for the period ending January 20. Kugelman has been named the Women's Diver of the Week, while Aung has been selected as the Men's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week.
A junior, Kugelman (Tappan, NY / Tappan Zee) won from both diving boards in Rensselaer's lone meet last week, a 172-126 win at Union College. She totaled 247.72 points to defeat three others from 1-meter and then beat three others from 3-meters by compiling 260.40 points. She won the former by almost 10 points (237.00) and the latter by nearly 30 points (229.27).
Aung (Redding, CA / University Prep.), a freshman, won three of the four events in which he swam at Union, helping the Engineers to a 221-77 victory. Individually, he was first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.58 as well as in the 100 fly with a time of 52.70. He also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team, which touched in 1:37.53 - nearly four seconds in front of the second place team (1:41.05) - and swam on the second place 200 free relay team (1:30.70).
This is the third time that Aung, a computer and systems engineering major, and Kugelman, a psychological science major, have been recognized. They were both previously honored in mid-October and again in mid-November.
Rensselaer's swimming & diving teams return to action on Saturday when they host Skidmore College in a dual meet at Robison Pool (1pm). RPI's women's team looks to improve to 5-1, while the men will attempt to keep their record perfect at 6-0.
