Castillo-Sanchez Wins ITA Tournament; Earns AA

TROY, N.Y. - For the first time in school history, a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete from tennis has earned All-America as a singles player as Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez garnered the honor by winning the ITA Regional Tournament. The senior won in the semifinals and finals to advance to the ITA National Tournament later this month in Georgia.

Castillo-Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, FL / Wiregrass Ranch), the No. 3 seed, defeated Alper Kulturel of Skidmore College 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals before beating Matthew Michibata of The College of New Jersey 6-3, 6-4 in the championship match. The wins were the fifth and sixth of the weekend for Rensselaer's captain, who won each match in straight sets.

This is the second All-America in Castillo-Sanchez's career, having earned the honor in doubles with classmate Zack Ebenfeld (Pembroke Pines, FL / American Heritage) in 2016 when they were freshmen. That was the first time RPI had ITA Tournament Champions and subsequent All-Americans.

Castillo-Sanchez will play in the ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia from October 17-19.
