UTICA, N.Y. - Four individuals won events, four others finished second and the 4x400 relay team was the runner-up as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team won the 10-school, multi divisional Utica College Invitational. RPI finished with 177.5 points, which was enough to beat second place SUNY Cortland (128), third place Utica (76.5) and the rest of the field.
Senior
Mark Shapiro and junior
Neil Casimir both had wins and a second place finish to lead the way. Shapiro won the shot put with a distance of 14.28 meters and was second in the weight throw at 16.69 meters. Teammates
John Gonzalez (13.68) and
Marco Oliveri (13.05) were third and fourth in the shot, respectively.
Casimir won the 400 for the third time in as many meets this season, crossing the finish line in 50.65 seconds. He was also the first attached competitor to complete the 200 meters, finishing in 23.10, which was only .03 behind the winner who was unattached.
Also victorious on the track was sophomore
Owen Szabo, who won the 3000 meters in 8:59.38. Teammates
Jason Gibbons (9:00.15) and
Grey Conover (9:05.80) finished second and third, respectively.
In the mile, Rensselaer boasted the top four runners and six of the top seven with senior
Noah Falasco earning the win in a time of 4:15.96. Teammates
Henry Jaques (4:21.13),
Jake Kloman (4:24.02) and
Erik LaCourt (4:24.32) rounded out the top four.
The foursome of
Luke Lyons,
Ben Ertel,
Joey Hinckley and
Leighton James ran second in the final event of the meet, the 4x400. They crossed in 3:22.48, which was good enough for second.
