Hall of Fame Bio
The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) department of athletics mourns the loss of Athletics Hall of Fame member Donald T. Birkmayer '49, who passed away on November 5 at the age of 95.
A member of the department's staff both as an undergraduate and afterwards, he is most well-known as the public address voice at the Engineers men's hockey games as well as the editor of the Intercollegiate Hockey Newsletter. He was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

Donald T. Birkmayer, 95, died November 5, 2020, in Ithaca with his daughters by his side. Born in Troy he was the son of the late Louis and Helen Birkmayer. Don served in the United States Army from 1944-1946, fighting in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated from RPI in 1949 in management engineering. He then went on to work for the N.Y.S. Dept. of Transportation until his retirement. Don enjoyed college hockey and was the announcer for RPI hockey for many years as well as editor of the Intercollegiate Hockey Newsletter. Don is survived by his children, Carolyn S. Cox Hughes (John), Nancy J. Kane (Kevin), Richard A. Birkmayer. Don was predeceased by their mother, Virginia Birkmayer. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Don was predeceased by his brother, Richard Birkmayer; and his second wife, Madonna Stahl.Â
