VERONA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's golf team finished runner-up to New York University at the 2021 Liberty League Fall Preview Tournament, closing out the two-day competition with a combined 584, while the Violets shot a 582, erasing a two-stroke deficit from the opening round on Saturday. The event was hosted by the University of Rochester at the Turning Stone Shenendoah course.
RPI was paced by
Trent Han on Day 2, who shot a two-under 70 and finished third overall among individuals.
Joey Harrigan, who had the lead after Saturday's opening round, wound up second by shooting a 141 (70-71)Â for the event. He was two strokes back of Skidmore's Harry Grosso, who earned medalist honors with a four-under 139 (71-68).
Matt Buckley improved on his Day 1 score of +4 (76), by shooting a +2 (74), which was good for 150 and third on the Engineers.
As a team, Rensselaer was a tournament-best -8 on par 5s, and averaged 3.08 on par 3s. The Engineers also combined to shoot the most birdies (35), beating out NYU (28) and Skidmore (25). Individually, Han was -3 on par 3s and -5 and par 5s, which were both tops among entrants.Â
The second place finish is the Engineers'Â fourth straight in the Fall Preview, dating back to 2017.Â
RPI is back on the course next Saturday and Sunday for the Saratoga National Invitational in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.Â
