LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Matt Lecky finished first on the team and 38th overall to earn All-America while leading the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's cross country team to a 14th place finish at the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship Meet at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. Junior
Nia Goddard ran as an individual in the women's event and placed 45th in the nation.
Goddard ran her 6k race in 21:53.7 for her 45th place finish. She ran her first 1k in 3:42.3 and then reached 3k in 10:44.6. She went the next kilometer in less than four minutes before crossing the 5k mark in 18:19.6. She was .1 from 44th place and only three seconds from 40th.
Kassie Rosenbum of Loras won the race with a finish of 20:11.1. John Hopkins (130 points) edged Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (132 points) for the team title.
Lecky finished with a time of 24:21.6 for a 4:55 per mile pace. He had a 1k time of 3:09.2, reached 3k in 9:14.9 and ran a 19:34.1 6.4k time before placing just outside the top 35. He was less than a second in front of the 39th place finisher and nearly two ahead of the 40th runner.
John Reed, a senior, was 57th in the field of 294 competitors with a time of 24:33.0 - a pace of 4:57. He ran a 15:36.7 5k and reached the 6.4k split in 19:38.0. Vince Simonetti was third on the team and 114th overall with a total time of 24:56.5 and Owen Szabo was next on the Engineers, crossing in 24:59.0.
Others to compete for RPI were Jason Gibbons (25:36.5; 209th), Cory Kennedy (25:38.8; 214th) and Steven Spreizer (25:47.9; 234th).
Alex Phillip of John Carroll won the individual title with a time of 23:27.6, covering the 8k course on a 4:44 pace. No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer was the team champion with 80 points, which bested second place MIT (112 points), the No. 2-ranked team, by 32 points. No. 4 Williams College was third with 167. RPI, which entered the meet ranked No. 17 in the nation, had 409 points.
