Ryan Quinn and sophomore
Thomas Fraser each shot a tournament-best 71 (-1) to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team to a 9-stroke lead after Day 1 at the Liberty League Championship on Saturday at Turning Stone Resort's Shenendoah Course. The Engineers shot a 290 as a team, with Clarkson (299) and Skidmore (299) currently tied for second.
Quinn, who won the Liberty League Preview last Saturday on the same course, paced the Engineers with five birdies on the day, while Fraser was the only player in the field to shoot under par on the course's par 4 holes. He and freshman Thomas Buckley have a tournament-high 13 pars through one day of competition. Senior
Griffin Chenard was one of only two players in the field to play the par 3s under par.
As a team, the Engineers converted the most birdies (16) and the second most pars (54). RPI was a tournament-best -5 on the course's par 5s and +7 on its par 4s.
Following RPI, Clarkson and Skidmore is Rochester (305) in fourth place, Hobart (311) in fifth and St. Lawrence (312) in sixth.
The 36-hole Liberty League Championship concludes on Sunday.
