Andrew Imrie broke a 3-3 tie and moments later classmate
Brian Niguidula clinched the match as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team came from behind to defeat Vassar College 5-3 in the semifinals of the Liberty League Championship Tournament. With the victory the top-seeded Engineers improve to 5-0 and advance to host the conference final on Saturday. The Brewers conclude the year with a 5-1 record.
Vassar took the lead through the doubles matches by winning at both No. 2 and No. 3. RPI quickly earned the advantage with 6-1, 6-1 singles wins by both
Abraham Yohannes at No. 5 and
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez at No. 1. The Brewers evened the score with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 but Imrie, who won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, and Niguidula, who won at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 win, closed out the competition.Â
RPI plays either No. 2 Hobart College or No. 3 Skidmore College on Sunday at 1pm for the right to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
