Men's Tennis to Host League Final on Sunday

TROY, N.Y. - Just like on April 24 when it opened the season, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team faces Skidmore College in a head-to-head contest, those this meeting is for the Liberty League championship. RPI, the top seed, and No. 3 seeded Thoroughbreds play in the conference final on Sunday at 1pm at Sharp Courts in Troy.

RPI (5-0) advanced to the final with a 5-3 win over No. 4 Vassar College on Thursday, while Skidmore (6-1) captured its semifinals match at No. 2 Hobart College by a 5-1 margin.

The Engineers, who are coached by Jon Satkowski, earned the No. 1 seed with an undefeated conference record (3-0), which included a 6-3 win over the Thoroughbreds. In that match, which was played in Troy, Rensselaer won a pair of doubles matches, both in a tiebreak, and then captured four singles matches.

Skidmore jumped out to the lead with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles but RPI bounced back at No. 1 with Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, FL / Wiregrass Ranch) and Andrew Imrie (Andover, MA / Andover) winning 8-7 (7-5). The No. 3 tandem of Abraham Yohannes (Albuquerque, NM / Albuquerque Academy) and Winston Yu (San Ramon, CA / Dougherty Valley) added an 8-7 (7-3) win.

Castillo-Sanchez (No. 1), Imrie (No. 2) and Yohannes (No. 5) were also victorious in singles, along with Brian Niguidula (Arlington, MA / Arlington) at No. 4. Imrie battled back to win a three-set match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while his teammates won in straight sets.

The winner of Sunday's contest garners an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
