MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Aiden Drover-Mattinen defeated three seeded players and teammate
Igor Visnevskij beat a pair and the freshmen captured the A Flight and D Flight singles titles at the Middlebury College Invitational, respectively.
After beating the No. 1 seed in three sets in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Drover-Mattinen met the No. 4 seed, Jeff Chen of Brandeis, in the semifinals and defeated the senior 6-1, 6-3. The finals pitted him against Isaac Gorelick, another senior, and Drover-Mattinen prevailed 6-3, 6-3.
Visnevskij, the No. 3 seed in the D Flight, took on No. 2 seed Aryan Nijhawan of Brandeis in the semifinals and posted a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over the freshman. The championship match was a walkover of Carlo Hayden, the No. 4 seed from Tufts. Hayden had previously beaten Rensselaer freshman
Bryce Burnham in the semifinals 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
Also competing in the semis for the Engineers were
Yudai Teruyama in the B Flight as well as
Abraham Yohannes and
Peter Lohrbach in the C Flight, but they were each defeated.
RPI is back in action on October 1 when it plays in the ITA Regional Tournament in Geneva, N.Y.
