Golf Begins Season With Win at St. John Fisher

MACEDON, N.Y. - With his team trailing by a single stroke with one hole to play, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) senior Joey Harrigan shot par on the 18th, while the competitor from McDaniel College double bogeyed and the Engineers captured the St. John Fisher Invitational with a two-day total of +39, 607 in the season opening tournament for seven schools. 

RPI, which shot 295 for a 7-stroke lead heading into Monday's second round, shot a 312, while the Green Terror shot a 306 to finish one shot back (608). Stevenson University was third with a 622 (302-320) and the host Cardinals were fourth with a 627 (319-308). The tournament was played on the par-72, 6739-yard Blue Heron Hills Country Club.

The Engineers were led by sophomore Matt Buckley, who finished third overall with a two-day total of +8, 150. Following a 73 on Sunday, he shot 77 on Monday, including two birdies on the front nine and a total of 10 pars. Harrigan shot 74-78 - 152, +10 to finish tied for fifth place. He had a birdie on the par-5 eighth and closed his round with four straight pars.

Freshman Jacob Lindsay, who played as an individual, had the best round of all players on the course on Monday, finishing with a +2, 74. He began with three pars before a double bogey on the par-5 fourth. A bogey on the fifth hole was followed by two pars, a birdie, two pars, a birdie and six more pars before he bogeyed the 18th. He finished in fifth place, tied with Harrigan and one other player.

Junior Thomas Fraser also had a top 10 finish with his two-day total of 153 (72-81), which put him in a tie for eighth place. Senior Trent Han was two strokes behind (76-79 - 155), tying for 10th place.
