UTICA, N.Y. -
Sean Shannon won the 600 meter dash and the 4x200 relay team was also victorious to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team to a fourth place finish in the 12-school Utica University Holiday Classic. The Engineers registered 70 points to finished behind SUNY Cortland (220), the host Pioneers (111), and SUNY Delhi (88). Hamilton was fifth with 42 points.
Shannon was the top scoring individual for Rensselaer with his victory, which came in a time of 1:24.76. Competing in his first meet of the season, he was nearly two seconds in front of the runner-up, Andrew Richardson of Hamilton, who crossed the finish lin in 1:26.41.
The 4x200 squad also registered 10 team points by winning in a time of 1:32.43 with a foursome of
Donovan Myrick,
Peter Cavanaugh,
Joey Hinckley and
Stephen Fajen. They held off a team from Utica, which ran a 1:33.94.
Hinckley, a senior, also scored in the pole vault with a fifth place finish with teammate
Tyler Knapp placing eighth.Â
The Engineers had four others who also scored in two events with Shannon being one of them. The sophomore ran the anchor leg on the runner-up 4x400 relay team which had a 3:30.62.
Owen Haas,
Domenick Rayleonard, and
Rahul Maharjan also competed and the group was two seconds from victory. SUNY Delhi's foursome ran a 3:28.34.
Maharjan (800), Rayleonard (800), and Haas (triple jump) were the others with multiple scoring finishes. Also on the track,
Max Liu was fourth and
Kensei Chen was seven in the 60 meters.
RPI's top finish in the jumping events was a runner-up from freshman
Yathin Vemula, who reached 1.86 meters.
Luke Kovalcin was eighth, while
Luke Alexander was eighth in the shot put.
