WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior
Luke Lyons had an individual victory and was part of a first place relay team and
Robert Smith won the long jump to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) track & field teams at the West Point Tune-Up. The multi divisional meet was non-team scoring.
In the 400 meter dash, Lyons posted a winning time of 50.52 to defeat 32 others, including the runner-up who ran a 50.74. Lyons ran a 23.76 in the first 200 and then hit 26.76 in the second for the 50.52 total. He then ran last in the 4x400, helping the Engineers to a 3:29.28, which edged Bloomfield's foursome's time of 3:30.91. Leading off for RPI was
Sean Shannon, followed by
Rahul Maharjan and
Domenick Rayleonard. Rensselaer's B relay was fourth in the 13-squad event with a time of 3:38.59.
Smith, a sophomore, won the 10-competitor long jump with a maximum effort of 6.57 meters. He reached that on his second attempt and tied Oluwatosin Gbotosho of the UCONN Club. The third place finisher was a jumper from the University of Maine who maxed out at 6.51 meters.
Back on the track, the Engineers boasted four of the top seven runners in the 1000 meters with
John Reed placing third behind a duo from the University of Albany. He crossed in 2:33.15 with teammates
Matthew Smalling (2:33.31) and
Dylan Rosemark (2:34.03) directly behind him.
Steven Spreizer was seventh in the 18-person field.
Patrick Smyth was third in the mile with a time of 4:25.69 with teammate
Brandon Marks two spots behind him and
Jonathan Craun placed third in the 3000 meters with a 8:46.59.Â
RPI had the third place finisher in the 800 meters with
Davis Piercy crossing in 1:57.29. He was first among Division III runners with competitors from Maine and West Point ahead of him. Shannon was sixth in the event, which had 38 racers.
Eileen Beres had the top finish for the Rensselaer women with a third place in the 3000 meters. Her time of 10:39.13 was less than a second behind the runner-up.
Kat Morin finished fourth of 12 in the 400 meter dash (1:04.09) and Jordan Porter was fifth in the 21-competitor 800 meters (2:27.44). She was first amond Division III runners.
RPI returns to action on Friday and Saturday when it competes in the Liberty League Championship.
