ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior
Matt Lecky was a double-winner, capturing both the mile (4:10.99) and 3000-meter run (8:31.47) at the Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championship and was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. He helped Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a third place finish in the seven-school, two-day meet with 150.5 points. The University of Rochester won with 174.50 points with the host Ithaca College in second with 165. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was fourth with 85 points.
Lecky's time in the mile, which was run on Friday, was both a meet and facility record. The record of 4:11.52 that was set in 2008 by Hamilton's Peter Kosgei was one the two longest-standing meet records. On Saturday in the 3000, Lecky led a strong RPI contingent by winning the 29-competitor race in a time of 8:31.47. Teammate
John Reed was second in 8:33.08 and the Engineers also boasted the fourth and sixth place finishers.
Cory Kennedy crossed in 8:37.84 to come in fourth and
Jason Gibbons was sixth with a time of 8:42.59.
Rensselaer also had the fourth and sixth place finishers in both the 800 meters and 60 Hurdles. Freshman
Sean Shannon was RPI's top finisher in the 800 with a time of 1:57.61 and Piercy ran a 1:58.20. In the 60 H,
Bate Egbe registered a time of 8.93 to finish fourth - four spots up from his qualifying slot of eighth (8.98).
Josh Dobransky was sixth with a 9.12.
Shannon helped the 4x400 relay team to a fourth place finish by running the third leg for the squad that ran a 3:25.17.
Rahul Maharjan led off, followed by
Peter Cavanaugh, Shannon and
Luke Lyons as the anchor.
The Engineers also had impressive performances in the jumps with
Jacob Haqq placing third in the triple with a distance of 13.50 meters. After fouling on his first two attempts, the sophomore hits 12.94 meters, 12.81 meters, another foul and then 13.50 meters.
The high jump included three from RPI in the top 5 with
Luke Kovalcin reaching 1.80 meters on his second attempt to finish third,
Desmond Lambe getting to 1.80 meters on his third try for fourth and
Tim Wise maxing out at 1.75 meters for fifth.
Wise, a senior, also competed in the heptathlon and finished fourth with 4043 points. He was second in both the long jump and high jump in the hep.
