TROY, N.Y. - The Liberty League weekly honorees in men's tennis include Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Aiden Drover-Mattinen, who was named the Rookie of the Week, it has been revealed. It is the second straight week the freshman has been selected.
Drover-Mattinen (Portugal Cove - St. Philips, NL / Blyth Academy) played in two of the team's three matches last week and posted a 4-0 record, going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 at doubles, each while playing at No. 1.
He led the No. 29 Engineers to an 8-1 win at Union College by winning 8-2 in doubles with playing partner
Peter Lohrbach (Little Neck, NY / North Port) and capturing his singles match, 6-1, 6-2. Against No. 14 Brandeis University on the road on Saturday, he and Lohrbach had an 8-4 win before Drover-Mattinen won 6-3, 6-4 in singles. The Engineers upended the Judges 5-4.
The top-ranked player in the Northeast Region, he is 20-1 in singles this season, including 12-0 while playing No. 1 in dual matches. His lone loss was to teammate and classmate
Emilio Van Cotthem (Vero Beach, FL / Vero Beach) in the final of the A Flight in the season-opening Siena College Invitational.
Drover-Mattinen is 12-6 in doubles with an 11-2 record at No. 1. He and Lohrbach, who are ranked seventh in the region, are 11-2 as a tandem.
This is the 11th weekly award for the computer science major, who has been the Rookie of the Week four times, the Singles Performer of the Week five times and part of the Doubles Team of the Week twice.
The Engineers (12-2; 7-0 Liberty League), who are coached by
Jon Satkowski, host Ithaca College in their regular season finale on Saturday. RPI has sealed the top seed in the conference championship tournament, which begins on May 6 at Cornell University.
