Lyons, Smyth & White Triumph at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. - Luke Lyons won the 400 meters, Patrick Smyth led a group of seven in the top 10 of the 5000 meters and Evan White won the javelin for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team, which competed in the Hamilton College Outdoor Invitational, a non team scoring meet.

Smyth, a junior, ran with the front pack throughout the 5000 meters and crossed the finish line in 15:14.62 with teammate Dan Stevens in second with a time of 15:19.38. Oneonta's Eion McClain was third (15:23.81), but RPI had finishers four-through-seven, ninth, 12th and 13th to dominate the 30-person event.

Rensselaer also had multiple top finishers in the pole vault with four of the top six being Engineers. Joey Hinckley was third (3.95) followed by Eoin O'Gara in fourth (3.80), Tyler Knapp in fifth (3.65) and Casey Selinske in sixth (3.65).

Lyons, a junior, won the 21-competitor 400 in a time of 49.65, easily outdistancing the runner up, Andrew Fox of Union who crossed in 51.26. Running second on the track was Matthew Smalling in the 28-competitor 800 (1:56.90), the 4x100 relay team of Max Liu, Bate Egbe, Liam Pek and Hinckley (45.44) and Josh Dobransky in the 110 Hurdles (16.61). Liu, a freshman, went on to finish fourth in the 100 meter dash (11.43).

In the javelin, White was the only competitor to eclipse 55 meters with his maximum distance of 55.64. The runner-up, James Ball of the host Continentals, had a 49.20.

Senior Josh Cohen had two third place finishes in the throws events, reaching 40.63 meters in the discus and 46.60 in the hammer. Teammate Justin Park was fourth in the hammer with a max toss of 42.59.

RPI returns to competition next Saturday when it travels to Tufts for a meet with the Jumbos, MIT and Bates.
