Box Score LATHAM, N.Y. - A dominant doubles effort and wins in five of six singles matches helped lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team to an 8-1 win over Vassar College in Liberty League action on Sunday afternoon at Tri-City Fitness Club. The 27th-ranked Engineers move to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in league action, while the Brewers are now 5-6 and 2-2 in the Liberty League.
Doubles action got things going as RPI senior
Eddie Wu and sophomore
Suhas Krishnan posted an 8-2 win over senior Mihajlo Ivanovic and sophomore Arun Guruswamy from three. Next off was flight two as sophomore
Max Safanov and rookie
Igor Visnevskij narrowly bested Brewers' sophomores Benjamin Almquist and Jay Wong, 8-6.
Rounding out the action was the first flight as RPI rookie
Aiden Drover-Mattinen and senior
Peter Lohrbach recorded a narrow 8-7 (9-7) win against senior Mathew Yee and rookie Arnav Agostinho.
In singles, the Engineers moved the score to 4-0 as Drover-Mattinen notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Wong from the first flight. Four saw Krishnan record a 6-2, 6-3 win against Agostinho to seal the match win.
Next off was two as rookie
Emilio Van Cotthem posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against Yee, while six saw freshman
Bryce Burnham had a 6-3, 6-0 victory against sophomore Nihal Kothari. Five saw a battle between Lohrbach and Ivanovic. The first set went in a 6-4 favor to Lohrbach, while the second was a 6-4 win for the Brewers' senior. Locked in a tie, Lohrbach sealed the win with a 6-3 third set win for the 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
The Brewers point came from three as Almquist garnered the win with a 6-4, 6-4 score over Yohannes.
RPI returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Skidmore for a 1pm Liberty League match. Vassar is also in action Saturday, hosting Ithaca College (1pm).
