Golf Finishes Second at League Championship

VERONA, N.Y. - Thomas Fraser, Trent Han and Jacob Lindsay all finished in the top 6 as individuals but it wasn't enough for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team to overcome New York University (NYU) in the 2022 Liberty League Golf Championship as the Violets earned the title with the Engineers placing second.

RPI shot a combined -5, 283 on Sunday and moved from third place to second with its three-day total of +12, 876 (301-292-283). NYU was -4 on the day and compiled a +3, 867 (297-286-284) in the event, which included seven schools at the par 72, 6763-yard Turning Stone Resort Shenendoah Course. Skidmore College was third with a +13, 877 (295-294-288) and the University of Rochester was fourth with a +21, 885 (308-294-283).

Kevin McGough of Skidmore earned medalist honors with a -7, 209, which included a round of 6-under, 66 on Sunday. NYU had the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 finishers.

Fraser, a junior, led Rensselaer with a +2, 218, which was highlighted by a -2, 70 in the final round. He had seven pars and two birdies on the front and eventually got to -4 on the day after birdies on Nos. 10 and 11. A bogey at No. 12 put him at -3 for the day, which is where he finished thanks to pars on each of the final six closing holes.

Tied for sixth place were RPI teammates Trent Han and Jacob Lindsay, who shot -2 and even on Sunday, respectively. Han, a senior, climbed five spots on the leader board by going out at 2-under, including an eagle-3 on the par-5, 552-yard eighth hole. He bogeyed No. 11 but got the shot back at No. 16 with a birdie-3. Lindsay's day included two birdies and a bogey on the front and a birdie and two bogeys on the back.

Senior Joey Harrigan also had an even day on Sunday, thanks in part to three birdies, while sophomore Owen Himmer carded a 77. Like Han, he had an eagle on No. 8.

While NYU receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, the Engineers wait to hear if they are selected for an at-large berth. The NCAA announcement is expected on Monday.
