HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -
Joey Harrigan had three birdies on the back nine for a 2-under coming in and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute senior finished with an even-par 71 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship at the Mission Inn Resort and Club. Harrigan played the par-71, 6792-yard Las Colinas course on Tuesday and will be on the par-72, 6748-yard El Campeon course on Wednesday. He tees off at 12:25pm.
In his national tournament debut, Harrigan (Highland Park, IL / Highland Park) began with a bogey on one, but bounced back with a birdie on five. Consecutive bogeys put him at +2 after nine holes and a bogey on 11 added a stroke. Back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 pulled him to +1 and a birdie on the par-4 17th leveled his round.
At day's end, Harrigan's score was good enough for a seven-way tie for seventh place, one stroke from fifth and two from second. William Knauth of Carnegie Mellon shot a 3-under to hold the lead.
