Aiden Drover-Mattinen won his first match in a tiebreak and led 4-1 when his first round opponent retired to advance, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete suffered a three-set defeat to the No. 2 seed in the second round of the NCAA Championship at the USTA National Campus.
Drover-Mattinen went ahead of Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins 2-0 in the first set before falling behind 3-2. He made it 4-3 but had to bounce back to tie the match at 5-5 and eventually won 7-6 (4). The second set was 1-1 before Drover-Mattinen won three straight ahead of Yu having to retire. The final score was 7-6 (4), 4-1 (ret.).
In the second match against Stan Morris of Middlebury, Drover-Mattinen came back from down a set with a 6-3 win in the second. The third was tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 before Morris closed it out. The final score was 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
